Column 23: Breaking new ground with aseptic packaging
They say you can’t stop progress. And Lassonde is living proof of that maxim!
Fifteen years had gone by since the Company’s first single-serve products made their appearance on the market. Rougemont apple juice and fruit drinks in small metal cans revolutionized the market back in the day. But a lot had changed since then.
Lassonde had relaunched its Oasis product line in the one-liter format HYPA containers to great success. A single-serve format was the logical next step. But what was the best choice of container to market the product to consumers? The first priority was to ensure there would be no difference in quality between the regular format and the new sixounce portions.
As a firm geared towards research and development, Lassonde discovered a brand new technique for the aseptic packaging of juices. The first innovation of its kind in the world, it ensured the complete sterilization of all the panels and the contents. The juice thus remained pure at room temperature.
In 1985, Lassonde launched its six-ounce singleserve Oasis juices. They were an instant hit! However, after a time the Company became aware that the method for perforating the container was not quite up to scratch. Four years later, Lassonde put another single-serve container on the market (more about that in another column). Still the ERCA technology, the first aseptic packaging method developed for the global food market, allowed Lassonde to master the then novel packaging technique which is so widely used today.
